Year 5 and 6 World of Work Week

On Monday 22nd - Thursday 25th January, Year 5 and 6 took part in our first ever World of Work Week, also known as Careers Week. The children took part in a range of activities, met volunteers from a range of employers, practised their key skills and explored their options for when they leave school. Take a look at what they got up to each day!

Monday 22nd January - Day 1

On day one of Careers week, all of KS2 took part in a game called ‘What’s my line?’. The children had to try and work out the career of the volunteer that joined us! We were very lucky to be joined by Adam who works for NHS England as a Senior Service Manager. We had great fun guessing his job from the clues he gave us, as well as finding out what skills we already have that would be useful as a junior doctor!

We then spent some time working in classes, learning about the different options they will have ahead of them when they leave Y11 in a few years time. The children learned about T levels, apprenticeships, traineeships, work and study. They then thought about their own future and aspirations and spent time researching suitable careers that suit their strengths and values.

Monday was a very busy day, as we also had a fantastic STEM workshop with Vickie from Willmott Dixon. We got the chance to learn about her role in the construction industry and practised key skills needed in the world of work, using snap circuits. We loved it!

We’d like to say a massive thank you to the volunteers that joined us, giving up their time to help us understand their jobs.

Tuesday 23rd January - Day 2

On day 2, the children took part in an Enterprise day! We were joined by Suzanne and Jen from Circana, a supplier for the Co-op, who set the challenge to work in teams to create a new snack product that had sustainable packaging. The children decided on key roles in each group and worked extremely hard to develop their product - they were all fantastic! We also had the opportunity to talk with Keela, an academies advisor for the Co-op about our product and she gave us some excellent feedback about packaging, pricing and our unique selling point. After lunch, they had to present to the ‘dragons’ (Suzanne, Keela and Jen) in the hope they would invest in the idea.

The winners were a team in 6W who designed a fantastic product called ‘Farm Fruits’ - well done! We’d like to thank Keela, Jen and Suzanne for joining us and being our Dragons in the Den for the day!

Thursday 25th January - Day 3

On Thursday, the children explored how to write an effective letter of application to either be a Teaching Assistant in school, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team! Year 5 and 6 learned how to ‘sell themselves’ in a job interview and practised these skills. In the afternoon, every child had a 10 minute interview with some volunteers from our PTA, our governing body and the Co-op group. The children were very nervous but exceeded expectations, receiving incredibly positive feedback.

Thank you to Jo Sykes (Co-op Academies Director of Careers), Keela, Tracey, Samantha, Nicole, Amy, Sarah and Hannah.

At the end of the day, Jo let us know who was successful after their interviews for our job roles:

Monday 28th January
